Experience

Logica Ltd 1978 – 1985 (Programmer to Project Manager)

  • Designed and developed RAPPORT, the world’s first commercial, portable relational DBMS. Subsequently, designed an ad-hoc query facility for RAPPORT (the first commercial version of what is now known as SQL.)
  • Designed and developed the software for the original EMI Brian Scanner.
  • Designed and developed the world's largest war game simulation.
  • Manager of a 20-strong team developing Marconi’s intelligent, lightweight air-launched torpedo (£2 million project).
  • Manager of 40-strong team developing trajectory system for European Space Agency’s Ariadne spacecraft (£2 million project). Investigated future database requirements for NATO.
  • Manager of a 50-strong team developing the graphics, picture plotting and charting packages for the IBM PC (£5 million project).

SEMA 1985-1991 (Senior Consultant to Technical Director)

  • Designed and developed the configuration management system LIFESPAN, winner of the 1987 British Design Award for Software Excellence.
  • Developed several quality systems for organisations compliant with ISO 9001.
  • Consultancy on database systems, quality assurance and configuration management.
  • Manager of a 150-strong team developing the command and control system for the new Type 23 frigate (£1 billion project).

University of Paisley 1991 – (Lecturer to Head of Division)

  • Head of one of the largest and most successful divisions in the University, managing about 70 staff (45 academics and 25 commercial/support staff), 2000-2003.
  • Established the largest postgraduate IT department in Britain. In 1999, approximately 600 students in MSc IT, and 150 continuing MSc dissertation students.
  • Established an eBusiness Centre at the University, partly funded through European Regional Development Fund.
  • Established 3 eLearning programmes: MSc Management of eBusiness (development partly funded through the European Social Fund), MSc IT with Web Technology, MSc IT with eBusiness.
  • Established BSc Computer Games Technology programme and subsequently help establish the BSc Computer Animation/BA Computer Animation and Digital Art.
  • Worked within eLearning and Games-Based Learning since 1996 and have developed and run the postgraduate module Fundamentals of Database Systems and the undergraduate Introduction to Database Systems as fully online modules.
  • Member Institute of Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (MILTHE).
  • Member of Council of Heads and Professor of Computing (CPHC).

Income Generation

1995 –     £25K from Ayrshire Enterprise to establish a high-tech lab within the Craigie campus.

1995 –     Initiated the funding of MSc programmes through Training for Work with Renfrewshire Enterprise and initially Ayrshire Enterprise.

                Proven to be a hugely important contract for the University and was the funding route subsequently adopted for TBC.

                In the last year, this contract was worth about £750K to the University.
